Snowshoe

Picture of snowy_forest Although we did not know it when we took this trip it would become our last real trip before the Covid outbreak just a couple weeks later. At the time it was a long weekend in West Virginia after some heavy snow, in the hopes of good skiing. We came up to Snowshoe with only a couple days notice so we didn't stay on the mountain like we normally do, instead we stayed in Lewisburg to the south.
Picture of skiing Needless to say, the skiing was pretty good for March in the southeastern US. Plenty of snow and our son had reached the age and ability where he was willing to go down anything (and did so).
Picture of top_view If you're going to Snowshoe to ski, we'd normally recommend staying on the mountain. It's not that fun to get up extra early to drive up there, on the other hand it is feasible and it's substantially cheaper for both lodging and eating.
Picture of cavern_trail Since we were staying in Lewisburg we took the extra time to visit Lost World Caverns before leaving. This is a self guided cave tour (or was pre-Covid) where you basically buy your ticket and follow the lit path on your own.
Picture of lost_world_caverns The highlight is one enormous room with some fanciful lighting and yeah, that's one big stalagmite in the middle.
Picture of sandstone_falls We took a scenic route back, following the New River south into Virginia. This is sandstone falls viewed from high above at an overlook. There are also boardwalks out to the falls at river level from the west bank of the river.
